The German battery market increased by 35% last year, according to industrial association Zentralverband Elektrotechnik- und Elektronikindustrie e.V. (ZVEI).

Compared to 2019, last year Germany’s battery market grew to €5.9 billion euros last year, with lithium-ion claiming a €3 billion market share.

Christian Eckert, ZVEI specialist association manager during the ZVEI press conference, said: “Despite the corona pandemic, the German battery market is on an upward trend. Above all, the volume of the market for lithium-ion batteries has increased enormously.

"Batteries are one of the key technologies of the future. Without lithium-ion batteries, there is no electric vehicle, no e-bike, no smartphone and no defibrillator.

"Lead batteries play a major role in the uninterruptible power supply in hospitals and data centers."

Delegates to the conference heard the market volume for lithium-ion batteries was due, in part, to the high growth in imports of battery cells to Germany.

The total European battery imports in to the country reached around €3.8 billion, 79% above the previous year, which was around 52% of the total import volume.
