Small-scale VRFB serves as energy storage system for residential hybrid microgrid in Australia

VSUN Energy, a subsidiary of Australian Vanadium, has announced the sale of a residential vanadium-flow battery to a customer based in regional Western Australia.  

The standalone power system (SPS) will use a battery provided by V-Flow Tech, a VRFB manufacturer based in Singapore.

The SPS will consist of a 5kW/30kWh VRFB with a maximum discharge of 7kW and an Australian made grid-connection inverter from Selectronic. This will be paired with 12kW of solar PV and a back-up 18KVa diesel redundancy system. 

The SPS is designed to provide the microgrid with an uninterrupted, clean and safe source of energy primarily supplied by direct and stored solar energy. 

The system marks a move away from the short-duration energy storage systems using lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries favoured in Australia’s residential battery market.

Last year, Vsun Energy installed a 80kW/320kWh VRFB energy storage system— supplied by US-based manufacturer Avalon Battery— at a dairy farm in Victoria, Australia. The system was connected to a 450kW solar system and was deployed in collaboration with renewable systems provider Profit Share Power. 

In September 2019, Vsun has secured an order for a 20kW/80kWh VRFB to an apple orchard in Pakenham, Victoria.
