London Array is the world’s largest wind farm as developers confirm 175 offshore wind turbines are operational. The 630MW turbines which stand in the Thames estuary are part of a project jointly owned by Dong Energy, Masdar and EON.
“This is the final major milestone of the construction phase and the culmination of more than two years’ offshore construction work which began in March 2011 with the installation of the first foundation,” said London Array Project Director Richard Rigg.
The first of the Siemens 3.6MW turbines became operational six months ago at the site. The wind power group is now keen to minimise costs for future wind power projects. DONG Energy aims to lower costs for offshore wind farms to €100 MWh for future projects.
