The recently formed A123 Energy Solutions has commissioned its first Long Duration Grid Storage Solution, in Hawaii. The 1MWh installation was supplied as a turnkey solution for an existing Maui Electric Company (MECO) substation.
A123 provided all engineering, procurement, construction, installation, testing and commissioning for the 1MW nanophosphate lithium iron battery system.
“This installation is the second site we’ve commissioned on the island of Maui in the past five months,” said Bud Collins, President of A123 Energy Solutions. “But while the 11MW commissioned in December of last year was comprised of our widely deployed High Rate systems, this is the first time we’ve commissioned the Long Duration product. We’re very happy with how smoothly the installation went. The entire process took about five weeks from start of construction up to the completion of commissioning.”
The system comprises A123’s Long Duration Grid Battery System, which has energy storage configurations that can be scaled from 100kW to 4MW. It will provide peak-load shifting, voltage regulation, reactive power support, and wind curtailment relief for the MECO grid system.
A123 Energy Solutions has formed from the previous company A123 Systems following an acquisition by Wanxiang America, finalised in December 2012.
