CATL breaks ground on European gigafactory to streamline lithium-ion battery supply chain

Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) has broken ground on its German battery manufacturing plant— the first time the company has expanded beyond its China borders.

The company aims to make 14GWh of lithium-ion cells and modules a year by 2022—just four years after the deal was announced during talks in Berlin between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chinese premier Li Keqiang.
