InfraVia has taken a majority stake in Mercia Power Response and Balance Power Projects, bringing the two UK energy specialists together under a new banner: Supernova Power. The move creates a single, large‑scale platform focused on battery storage and flexible power, supporting the UK’s shift towards cleaner energy and long‑term net‑zero goals.
Balance Power, founded and owned by its original team, has become one of the UK’s most active battery storage developers. It has delivered 39 projects across multiple technologies and holds a pipeline exceeding 1.4GW of battery storage capacity nationwide.
Mercia Power Response, majority‑owned by Foresight Group since 2015, is known for its flexible power services. With expertise in developing, building and operating gas peaking plants and battery storage sites, Mercia plays a key role in maintaining grid stability as renewable generation grows. Its current portfolio includes 262MW of operational assets and more than 400MW in development.
Supernova Power will operate solely in the UK, combining development, construction, operations, energy management and financing. With ambitions to deliver more than 2GW by 2035, the new company aims to help balance the challenges of intermittent renewable generation, particularly offshore wind, by aligning supply with demand and providing reliable backup capacity.
InfraVia’s investment supports its wider strategy to accelerate renewable deployment across Europe, forming part of its €8bn commitment through InfraVia European Fund VI. InfraVia will hold the majority stake, with management teams from both Balance Power and Mercia retaining minority interests.
Phil Thompson, CEO of Balance Power and incoming CEO of Supernova Power, said, “This is a proud and exciting milestone…” while Graham White, CEO of Mercia Power Response and incoming Chairman of Supernova Power, added that the combined business will be “a potent force in the UK BESS market.”
