InstaVolt has begun construction on the UK’s first motorway charging site to feature on-site battery storage directly integrated with ultra-rapid battery EV chargers.
Located at Welcome Break Corley Services, between Junctions 3 and 3A on the M6, the installation marks a major milestone in the evolution of public EV infrastructure. Two large battery units will be deployed on either side of the motorway, storing electricity on-site and distributing it directly to chargers. This setup enables a smaller grid connection and ensures consistent ultra-rapid charging performance, even during peak demand.
The innovation also reduces standing and capacity charges, supporting InstaVolt’s off-peak rate of 60p per kWh between 8pm and 7am.
The Corley deployment is the first in a wider rollout, with 12 additional batteries planned across the InstaVolt network. Upcoming sites include North Wales and Eastbourne.
Once complete, the battery EV chargers at Corley Services will offer enhanced convenience and reliability for EV drivers and fleets travelling one of the UK’s busiest corridors. Charger upgrades will see existing 62.5kW units replaced with 160kW ultra-rapid chargers – eight on the northbound side and seven southbound.
“We’re the first to be able to provide this kind of battery storage system on a motorway network,” said Delvin Lane, CEO of InstaVolt. “We’re demonstrating how smart energy management can deliver reliable ultra-rapid charging while reducing pressure on the grid.”
