US-based solid-state battery maker ION Storage Systems has shipped the first samples of Cornerstone, the first commercial grade solid-state battery (SSB) platform for multi-industry adoption, to consumer electronics companies.
Cornerstone is a multilayer solid-state battery designed for future integration into compact, high-performance products such as smartphones, laptops, wearables and other devices.
The company, which is headquartered in Maryland, said its new platform will have a long cycle life, no swelling and enhanced safety without a bulky compression system. The new platform can be used for EV, aerospace and defence.
In February 2025, the company announced that its cell capacity increased by 25 times over previous cell designs whilst maintaining over 1,000 charge cycles for its larger commercial battery format.
It cycled the battery at a rate of C5 at room temperature and without compression to find that its cells maintained greater than 80% capacity.
“The industry has been waiting for solid-state batteries to progress from lab-scale prototypes to commercially viable products,” said Eric Lind, chief commercial officer, ION. “That inflection point is here with Cornerstone. According to our customers, we’re the only solid-state battery company currently delivering fully functional cells that don’t require compression for integration and testing in real-world consumer electronics – an achievement that sets us apart in a highly competitive landscape. This testing is the first step in the qualification process that will allow our technology to rapidly deploy into portable devices with significantly improved energy density, integration, thermal stability, and cycle life.”
