Indian steel-to-energy group JSW is in early stage talks with LG Energy Solution (LGES) of South Korea about jointly manufacturing batteries in India, according to Reuters.
The report stated JSW met with LGES executives this month to propose a partnership. The battery cells would be for both electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage. JSW is looking to build a local supply chain for EVs, which it wants to build. It is also reportedly talking to battery makers CATL, Panasonic and Toshiba.
An unnamed source in the Reuters story said JSW wants to build a gigafactory with 20 GWh capacity by the end of the decade. Initial phase would be 8 GWh.
LGES and JSW both declined to comment.
