South Korean car battery manufacturer LG Chem is planning to expand its battery production after experts said the demand of electric vehicles (EV) will start to gain market traction in 2016.
The company should come to a final decision in three to four months. “We are seriously considering investing in expanding our EV battery production”, said LG Chem president and head of its battery unit, Kwon Yong-soo. There are no further details regarding how much the manufacturer wants to increase the production or where the expansion will take place.
LG Chem supplies car batteries for a number of global automakers such as General Motors and Renault. The supplier has manufacturing facilities in South Korea and the United States.
In February, Chief Executive Officer Park Jin-soo said the company is considering of building a third EV battery plant in China. China is currently the world’s largest automotive market and Chinese government’s plans to decrease air pollution will increase the demand of EV battery production, Jin-soo stated.
