A partnership between Younicos and lithium-ion manufacturer Leclanche will create a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) used to stabilise power grids.
Swiss firm Lelanche will supply a 2.8MW battery system for the BESS – part of the world’s first megawatt-scale renewable energy storage system.
German energy storage specialist Younicos’ energy management software will pair with Leclanché’s BESS in the battery-park on the Azores island of Graciosa in the Atlantic Ocean.
The energy storage project will enable the grid integration of 1MW of solar and 4.5MW of wind power on the tiny Portugese island.
Once fully operational, the system could allow the island’s 5,000 residents to boost the share of utilised renewable energy sources from 15% in the energy mix to 65%.
A completion date for the project has not been announced, however Younicos has said progress will be made during 2015.
An affiliate of Recharge, one of Leclanché’s largest shareholders, $3.5 million in convertible debt to the project’s operating company Graciolica, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Younicos.
Last year Younicos provided software to Europe’s largest battery project, the 6MWh Big Battery in Leighton Buzzard, England.
