Danish regional operator Lokaltog has confirmed an order for 10 additional FLIRT Akku battery trains from Stadler, exercising an option from its October 2024 contract.
The new units will join Lokaltog’s fleet in 2029, reinforcing its commitment to delivering emission-free rail services across Eastern Denmark.
The FLIRT Akku battery trains offer up to 100km of battery-only range and recharge automatically via overhead lines or regenerative braking. In 2021, the model set a Guinness World Record by travelling 224km on a single charge without recharging – a record recently broken by Great Western Railway in the UK.
Stadler currently holds a 50% market share in Europe’s battery-powered train segment and also supplies hydrogen and hybrid propulsion systems for diverse operational needs.
“With this additional order, we will deliver a total of 24 modern, emission-free FLIRT Akku, a proven solution that provides zero-emission operations without compromising reliability or passenger comfort,” said Radosław Banach, CEO of Stadler Polska plant in Siedlce, where the trains will be built. “We are proud to continue our partnership with Lokaltog and to support their efforts toward green, future mobility.”
Designed to meet European TSI PRM standards, the battery trains feature low-floor boarding, wide doors, automatic gap bridges, and dedicated spaces for wheelchairs and bicycles. Onboard amenities include air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, passenger information screens, and a fully accessible universal toilet.
The new units will replace Denmark’s ageing IC2 vehicles, in service since 1997, and support Lokaltog’s long-term strategy for safe, inclusive and environmentally responsible rail transport.
