Lyten has completed its nearly $5 billion acquisition of Northvolt’s battery operations in Sweden, securing the Northvolt Ett site in Skellefteå and Northvolt Labs in Västerås, providing 16 GWh of existing manufacturing capacity, more than 160 hectares of industrial land and Europe’s largest battery R&D centre.
The Northvolt Ett facility is now preparing to restart production, with commercial cell deliveries expected in the second half of 2026. Lyten will produce lithium‑ion NMC batteries for energy storage systems, automotive applications, and wider mobility markets. Output from Ett is set to supply Lyten’s BESS plant in Poland later in 2026. Northvolt Labs will continue developing long‑life NMC cells while working with Lyten’s Silicon Valley team to scale lithium‑sulfur technology.
Lyten has also announced the creation of the Lyten Industrial Hub in Skellefteå. The hub will combine battery manufacturing, AI‑driven data centres, and additional industrial activities, supported by clean hydro power. As part of the transaction, EdgeConneX plans to acquire a data centre site from Lyten, with potential capacity of up to one gigawatt.
Lyten is working with local unions to launch a rehiring programme across both Swedish sites and expects to recruit more than 600 employees over the next year. CEO Dan Cook said, “With this acquisition, Lyten now operates one of the largest battery manufacturing campuses in Europe and the largest battery R&D center in Europe.”
Local leaders have welcomed the restart of production, highlighting the strategic importance of batteries for Europe’s competitiveness and energy resilience.
