Matrix Renewables has confirmed a Full EPC agreement with Tesla for a major standalone battery energy storage system in Eccles, Scotland.
The contract covers the design, construction and commissioning of a 500MW, two‑hour (1GWh) BESS, marking Matrix Renewables’ first standalone storage project in the UK and aligning directly with national ambitions for Net Zero 2050 and Clean Power 2035.
Sergio Arbeláez, managing director for Europe & Latam at Matrix Renewables, said, “We are delivering infrastructure at the scale required to support the UK’s transition to a clean, secure, and resilient power system.” He added that the installation highlights the company’s capability to deliver complex, utility‑scale storage through strong partnerships and long‑term strategy.
With all planning conditions discharged and full consent granted, construction is ready to begin. The Eccles site sits on key transmission corridors between Scotland and England, positioning the project to enhance grid flexibility, support renewable integration, and improve overall system resilience.
The project is backed by an advisory team including Enertis Applus+ for technical due diligence, GHD as technical advisor, and Black & Veatch as owner’s engineer. Matrix Renewables has also agreed a collaboration with the local Community Council to deliver shared initiatives for long‑term community benefit.
This development marks the company’s entry into the UK market and stands among its largest storage projects globally. Matrix Renewables is now pursuing further UK opportunities across renewables, storage and emerging technologies, with plans to add up to 3GW of new capacity in the coming years.
