MET Group has inaugurated Hungary’s largest standalone battery energy storage system (BESS), marking a major milestone in the country’s energy transition.
Located at the Dunamenti Power Station in Százhalombatta, the new 40MW/80MWh facility is designed for a two-hour cycle and builds on MET’s earlier 4MW/8MWh demonstrator project installed in 2022.
The advanced BESS system uses Huawei Technologies equipment and was delivered in collaboration with main contractor Forest-Vill. Its full energy capacity is sufficient to power Budapest’s entire public and decorative lighting for four hours – an impressive benchmark for clean energy resilience.
At the official opening ceremony, Péter Horváth, CEO of Dunamenti Power Station, highlighted the strategic importance of BESS in advancing grid flexibility and renewable integration: “The application of battery energy storage systems is a key element on the road to energy transition, as they allow to increase the penetration of new renewable sources into the power grid.”
Péter Kaderják, president of the Hungarian Battery Association, emphasised the national vision: “We must strive by all possible means to exploit Hungary’s renewable energy sources as extensively as possible, using well-established, cost-effective technologies. Therefore, the Hungarian Battery Association supports the efforts of the Hungarian energy policy, which deals with the green energy transition as a top priority.”
This BESS milestone reflects MET Group’s broader European strategy, which includes investments in BESS developments across the continent – such as its 2024 acquisition of French operator Comax – and a growing portfolio of co-located solar-storage facilities.
