The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has approved a site permit for a 150MW battery energy storage system (BESS) by Snowshoe Energy, the battery storage company owned by Spearmint Energy.
The LFP BESS will store energy from the grid for four hours and discharge it during hours of peak demand. It will be located in Olmsted County, between Byron and Rochester.
The commission said that the BESS will help with fluctuations in energy supply and will support the integration of renewable energy into Minnesota’s power system.
The BESS is expected to be operational in late 2027 and will connect to the adjacent SMMPA-Maple Leaf substation.
Stakeholder responses to the commission meant that there have been extra requirements added to strengthen local safety and preparedness.
The modified plan from Minnesota PUC said the firm must work with local government and emergency services for a water main extension report, to develop a plan to get specialised emergency equipment and giving training to first responders. This is all to be at the expense of the company.
The site will have space for future battery upgrades to maintain capacity over time.
Commissioner John Tuma, Minnesota PUC, said, “This project represents a crucial evolution in our state’s energy infrastructure. By collaborating with the developer and local communities, we’ve approved a needed energy solution while ensuring safety and emergency preparedness remain a top priority. This proactive approach will be essential as we integrate new technologies to meet our energy goals.”
“The Minnesota PUC’s approval of the Snowshoe BESS project represents a significant milestone for Minnesota’s energy future,” said Mary Matze, manager of development at Spearmint Energy.
