Dominion Energy has unveiled what it describes as a first-of-its-kind mobile BESS, positioning it as a clean and silent replacement for traditional diesel generators.
The Green Grid 90kWh mobile battery energy storage system (MBESS) produces energy through solar panels mounted on its roof, storing power in a lithium-ion battery. The units can also be charged directly from the grid, operate without emissions, and run without fuel or noise.
Designed to support a wide range of temporary or remote power needs, the MBESS can supply electricity for festivals, concerts, weddings, remote worksites and electric vehicles. It can also provide backup power for utilities and emergency management organisations during outages. Multiple units can be daisy‑chained to meet higher demand, and each trailer‑mounted system can be towed by a mid‑sized SUV. One unit is capable of powering a medium‑sized food truck for nine hours.
Dominion Energy notes that the Green Grid 90kWh mobile BESS is the first non‑diesel mobile system to achieve stringent fire prevention and safety standards, including UL 9540, enabling it to be insured.
“This is the next generation of mobile power sources,” said Ed Baine, executive vice president of utility operations and president of Dominion Energy Virginia. “They’re ideal for small businesses, utilities or government agencies that need portable power – and want clean energy too.”
Developed by Dominion Energy and manufactured and serviced by Maryland‑based Power Up Connect, the mobile BESS is now commercially available. Prototype units supported emergency communications during Florida’s recovery efforts after Hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024. Dominion Energy Virginia plans to position several units across its facilities, beginning with its Chesterfield training site.
