Nano One Materials has produced lithium iron phosphate cathode active material using lithium carbonate from Standard Lithium’s South West Arkansas project in the US.
The lithium carbonate was processed using Nano One’s One-Pot process before the resulting LFP material was incorporated into coin cells assembled at the company’s Innovation Centre in Burnaby, British Columbia.
Nano One said the material met its target chemical and physical parameters and achieved the intended particle morphology. Initial electrochemical testing recorded a first-discharge capacity of approximately 155mAh/g.
The Canadian company pre-qualifies battery-grade raw materials to give prospective licensees and customers a wider choice of feedstock suppliers. Its staged protocol progresses from A-samples at laboratory scale through C-samples at pilot scale, before D-sample testing in a commercial plant.
According to Nano One, pre-qualifying materials could reduce some customers’ A-to-C sample qualification programmes by as much as one year, depending on their requirements.
Successful testing of lithium feedstock from Standard Lithium
Nano One CEO Alex Holmes said: “We continue qualification work with raw material producers across multiple jurisdictions and we are now pleased to have successfully tested lithium feedstock from Standard Lithium. As our feedstock supply base continues to grow, we believe this provides our prospective licensees and customers with greater sourcing optionality. Our customers and licensees are asking for cathode production they can build in their own jurisdiction with inputs they can source easily, and every feedstock we pre-qualify shortens the potential path to production.”
The companies’ relationship began in July 2025, when Nano One joined the inaugural cohort of the Arkansas Lithium Technology Accelerator. The programme is supported by Standard Lithium in partnership with Arkansas-based producers, academic institutions and government bodies.
Standard Lithium’s South West Arkansas project is intended to produce battery-quality lithium carbonate from brine resources.
Nano One is also expanding production capacity at its Candiac facility in Quebec to approximately 800 tonnes per year. Detailed engineering for the expansion was 85% complete in July, with commissioning of the enlarged demonstration line targeted for the first half of 2027.
