A nanofibre-based supercapacitor separator technology has gone into production through a partnership between Dreamweaver International and PH Glatfelter.
With a production capacity of 70 million square metres a year, the partnership’s titanium separators will be produced in Oberschmitten, Germany.
They will be the first supercapacitor separators to be produced outside Asia, says DreamWeaver President and COO Brian Morin.
“DreamWeaver is developing the technology and applications, and working with Glatfelter to scale the manufacturing process, manufacturing through delivery,” he said.
“Today [the separators] are going into standard supercapacitor applications: hybrid and electric buses, wind blade tuning, and electronic applications such as back-up power.”
The company’s products use a combination of nanofibres and microfibres in lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors.
All material for the supercapacitors is made in Japan, with NKK and Mitsubishi the two major manufacturers.
Glatfelter, which makes other materials for the energy storage industry, such as its range of web solutions for lead-acid batteries and papers for aluminium electrolytic capacitors, will lead the launch in China.
