NGK Insulators is to supply NAS batteries for a large-scale green hydrogen production project in Germany. It is being developed by HH2E, a German green hydrogen producer.
The order, for an undisclosed value, was from BASF Stationary Energy Storage, a subsidiary of German chemical manufacturer BASF.
The NAS batteries use sodium and sulphur and have a maximum output of 18MW and capacity of 104.4MWh and will comprise 72 container-type NAS batteries. NGK said they are part of the large-scale green hydrogen (defined as no CO2 produced during hydrogen manufacture) production being developed on the Baltic Sea shore in northern Germany.
The current order is the first delivery batch of the NAS batteries with total capacity of more than 230MWh reserved by HH2E for this project. Negotiations for future deliveries are also underway.
NGK said the batteries have stationary storage battery safety standard UL 1973 (cell and module level) and a test report based on UL 9540A standard, which is to verify batteries and storage battery systems fire risk.
