Nidec Conversion and Rolls-Royce have taken central roles in one of Lithuania’s largest battery energy storage developments for Ignitis Group’s 291 MW/582 MWh BESS programme.
The project spans three key sites and is expected to be fully operational by 2027. It is one of the largest energy storage deployments in the Baltic region and forms a cornerstone of Lithuania’s strategy to reinforce grid stability as renewable capacity accelerates.
Working alongside Rolls-Royce’s Power Systems division, Nidec Conversion is contributing its high‑performance Power Unit to the project architecture. The unit combines a PCS cabinet, transformer and Medium Voltage switchgear within a compact, skid‑mounted structure designed for efficient, reliable operation in utility‑scale environments. Its high power density and low noise profile make it suitable for locations where space or acoustic impact is a concern.
Ignitis Group, the largest listed energy company in the Baltic States, selected Rolls‑Royce to deliver mtu EnergyPack systems for the initiative. With a total output of 291MW and storage capacity of 582MWh, this represents Rolls‑Royce’s largest BESS order to date. Installations will be located at Kelmė and Mažeikiai wind farms and near the Kruonis Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Plant. By storing excess renewable generation and releasing it during peak demand, the systems will help stabilise the grid and support the expansion of green energy.
“We are honored to support one of the largest BESS projects in Lithuania with our advanced Power Unit technology,” said Dominique Llonch, President of Nidec Energy and President and CEO of Nidec Conversion.
The full system is scheduled to reinforce Lithuania’s grid resilience and renewable capacity from 2027.
