Japanese carmaker Nissan has committed £26.5 million to create Europe’s largest lithium-ion EV battery plant.
The firm will now make its future generation lithium-ion EV batteries at its plant in Sunderland, UK.
The facility is one of three Nissan battery production sites globally and will provide battery modules for the all-electric Nissan LEAF and e-NV200 electric van, which is manufactured at its facility in Barcelona, Spain.
The announcement comes as the carmaker marks its 30th anniversary of car production at Sunderland, although lithium battery production only began there in 2013.
In 2009 Nissan announced a £200m investment in its Sunderland plant to accommodate battery production of 60,000 units per year.
