US-based battery developer NOHMs Technologies has received a $750,000 grant from NASA to develop lithium-sulfur batteries for space exploration.
It comes during the second phase of NASA’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) programme, which funds research and development of technologies fulfilling Nasa’s needs.
NOHM aims to deliver lithium-sulfur batteries for space applications which are high energy, lightweight and safe.
The company is rumoured to be working on battery technology capable of delivering specific energies two times higher than lithium-ion battery systems.
SBIR Phase II contracts last for 24 months and focus on development, demonstration and delivery of the project. $750,000 was the maximum funding available in this stage of the programme.
