Nuvve Japan, headquartered in Minato‑ku, Tokyo, has confirmed plans to install and operate a new grid‑scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in Oyada, Mino City, within Gifu Prefecture.
The BESS installation is designed to deliver 2MW of output alongside 8MWh of storage, providing a four‑hour duration. Commercial operation is targeted for November 2026.
Securing this latest project brings Nuvve Japan’s contracted capacity to 6MW, marking another step in the company’s wider rollout of energy storage assets across Japan.
A central feature of the BESS is the use of the globally deployed ‘Nuvve Platform’. This system has been proven through the aggregation of electric vehicles and stationary batteries across markets in North America and Europe. Ahead of the scheduled launch, Nuvve Japan intends to refine its Japan‑specific market data, enabling its AI‑driven forecasting tools to carry out high‑accuracy price predictions and automated bidding. The platform will support participation in both the Japan Electric Power Exchange (JEPX) and the Frequency Response market, targeting revenue through arbitrage and grid‑support services.
The project also incorporates long‑duration storage using Sungrow technology. Pairing a 2MW output with 8MWh of capacity enables four hours of continuous discharge, supporting evening peak demand. Sungrow’s equipment is highlighted for its safety and reliability credentials.
Masa Higashida, CEO of Nuvve Japan, said, “This project represents another important step forward for Nuvve Japan as we continue to work closely with our partners to deploy high-value energy storage assets across the country.”
