Indian EV maker Ola Electric has launched a range of Roadster electric motorcycles and said it will integrate its cells into them from 2026.
It unveiled the Bharat 4680 cell and battery pack, along with the new Gen-3 EV platform and MoveOS 5 operating software, at Sankalp 2024, its annual launch event at its factory in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, on 15 August.
The cell is under trial production at its gigafactory, it said. There are a reported 70 patents related to this technology.
The lithium-ion cell pack has five times the energy (275Wh/kg) of the 2170 form-factor cells currently being used widely in automobile applications, it said. The cell has a wide operating window (10–70°C) and life of more than 1,000 charge cycles. It has a claimed fast-charging capability of 50% in 13 minutes.
Ola Electric specialises in vertical integration of EV technology, including battery cells. It manufactures battery packs at its Ola Futurefactory, along with motors and vehicle frames.
Construction of its gigafactory started in June 2023 and is due to enter its first phase of manufacture in 2025. Initial production capacity of the 4680 cell is 1GWh, expandable to 20GWh.
