Panasonic Energy has confirmed a multi-year supply agreement with Zoox, the Amazon-owned robotaxi company.
Beginning in early 2026, Panasonic Energy will deliver its latest 2170 cylindrical lithium-ion battery cells to support Zoox’s expanding autonomous ride-hailing fleet.
The 2170 cells will be central to powering Zoox’s purpose-built robotaxis. These cylindrical cells have already proven their performance across a range of successful EV products. As of September 2025, the company had supplied around 20 billion EV battery cells globally – equivalent to powering four million vehicles – without any recalls linked to battery issues. Initial supply will come from Japan, with future expansion planned at Panasonic Energy’s Kansas facility.
Zoox has recently opened its first serial production site in Hayward, California, to manufacture robotaxis at scale. The company also launched its ride-hailing service in Las Vegas, becoming the first in history to operate a fully driverless service using a purpose-built robotaxi.
Market forecasts highlight the scale of opportunity. Grand View Research valued the US robotaxi market at $450 million in 2024, with growth projected at over 70% CAGR through 2030. Global figures are expected to exceed $40–50 billion by 2030, led by North America and Asia-Pacific.
Kazuo Tadanobu, CEO of Panasonic Energy, said, “Zoox is truly unique. This represents a pivotal step for Panasonic Energy with the opportunity to contribute towards the next generation of mobility innovation. Zoox is reshaping urban transportation and Panasonic Energy is helping power these robotaxis for a safer, more sustainable, and connected future.”
