Battery maker Panasonic is to expand manufacture of electric vehicle (EV) batteries at a factory in Nevada, US, which it operates jointly with EV maker Tesla, according to reports.
Nikkei Asia reported on Monday that Panasonic Energy is to install a 15th production line at Gigafactory Nevada.
This follows pressure from Tesla, who, a Panasonic executive said, would buy “as many batteries as Panasonic can make.”
Reuters said on Tuesday that Panasonic plans to expand production at the factory by 10% within three years.
Panasonic reportedly said last month it was planning to build at least two new factories for the production of Tesla 4680 battery cells in North America, and by 2030. No location was specified. That would boost its annual auto battery capacity to 200GWh per year by March 2031. This March, it was at 50GWh.
