Dr Jean-Pol Wiaux, the director of RECHARGE (the European Association for Advanced Rechargeable Battery Technologies) and 30-year veteran of the battery collection, sorting and recycling industries has won this year’s International Battery Recycling Award.
Dr Wiaux was presented with the Honorary Award for his ‘remarkable commitment to and outstanding achievements in’ the battery recycling industry and its related fields during the International Congress for Battery Recycling (ICBR) on 16 September.
Circular economy and sustainable development advocate, Dr Wiaux started his career in the recycling business more than 30 years ago.
An ICBR spokesman said: “Dr Wiaux is recognised today for his pioneering spirit, support and endless promotion of best take-back and recycling practices in the Circular Economy of Batteries. His commitment led the worldwide battery recycling industry to a sustainable and environmentally sound business.”
His notable achievements include creating the first fully integrated battery sorting plant for the Swiss company, Batrec.
Dr Wiaux was appointed director general of RECHARGE in 2000, and became the chairman of the ICBR in 2017.
