Rosatom’s Fuel Division has brought its first lithium‑ion gigafactory online, marking a manufacturing milestone as the inaugural lithium‑ion energy storage facility of its kind in Russia.
Designed to deliver 4GWh of battery capacity each year, the plant can turn out the equivalent of around 50,000 traction batteries for electric vehicles.
The site operates with a full production cycle, beginning with the mixing of primary chemicals for battery cells and ending with the assembly of complete battery packs. More than 3,000 pieces of equipment are installed across production lines that extend for 2.5km. Around 90% of all operations are automated, supporting a manufacturing pace of one cell per second.
A second gigafactory is already under way in New Moscow, with construction having started in September 2023. This additional plant is planned to match the first facility’s annual 4GWh capacity, with commissioning expected in 2026.
By 2030, projections suggest the Russian energy storage sector could expand to between 20GWh and 30GWh.
