French battery producer Saft has secured its largest order to date to supply €35 million worth of lithium-ion batteries to telecom sites across India.
The Indian operator, Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, has broadband mobile base stations across India, it will be installing over ten thousand of Saft’s Evolion systems. The battery systems are 48V modules with a capacity of 3.9 kWh, which are maintenance-free and suitable for temperatures up to 75°C.
The battery systems will be manufactured at Saft’s Jacksonville, US, facility, with support from Saft’s joint venture with Indian partner Amco Power Systems, in Bangalore.
Xavier Delacroix, General Manager of Saft’s IBG Division said: “A key factor in this success is the high level of local support we now offer through our new Amco-Saft India Ltd factory that has just opened in Bangalore and we see huge potential for growth in India’s telecoms market.”
The Evolion batteries are compatible with existing telecom equipment, but have a smaller footprint than a conventional telecom battery, and consequently are lighter making transport and installation easier.
The deliveries will be completed by the end of the first quarter 2014.
