Battery developer Salient Energy has formalised a partnership with house builder Horton World Solutions (HWS) to demonstrate a “first in-field” demonstration of its residential zinc-ion battery energy storage system.
If qualified, the energy storage systems could be installed in more than 200,000 homes in the US.
Salient’s water-based design is built with zinc and manganese, and developed as a drop-in replacement for energy storage systems already on the market such as lithium-ion and lead-acid powered units.
Salient says its system can be paired with residential solar panels to enable customers to disconnect from the grid during outages.
HWS founder and CEO Terry Horton will join Salient Energy’s board of advisors.
Emerging battery technology
In January, 2021, Salient received a $1,583,125 grant from the California Energy Commission to support the design and assembly of its zinc-ion residential energy storage systems.
The US firm has used the cash to develop its novel zinc-ion batteries as an alternative to lithium-ion batteries— including opening an office and engineering facility in Oakland, California, in Q2 last year.
