Samsung SDI has signed a multi-year agreement with Mercedes-Benz to supply batteries for next-generation electric vehicles, marking its first EV battery supply deal with the automaker.
The agreement covers high-performance batteries for Mercedes-Benz’s upcoming EV models. The cells will use high-nickel NCM (nickel, cobalt and manganese) chemistry, designed to deliver high energy density, extended driving range, long lifespan and high power, alongside Samsung SDI’s proprietary safety technologies.
Mercedes-Benz plans to deploy the batteries in future compact and mid-size electric SUVs and coupé models, as part of its strategy for next-generation EV platforms.
The signing ceremony took place at the Andaz Seoul Gangnam Hotel and was attended by senior executives from both companies, including Samsung SDI president and CEO Joo Sun Choi and Mercedes-Benz Group chairman Ola Källenius.
Mercedes-Benz and Samsung to jointly develop advanced battery technologies
In addition to the supply agreement, the companies said they plan to expand collaboration in future mobility, including the joint development of advanced battery technologies.
“This partnership brings together the innovative DNA of both companies,” said a Samsung SDI official, adding, “It is meaningful in that Samsung SDI has secured a battery order aimed at strengthening its position in the global EV market.”
The signing coincided with the launch of Mercedes’ all-electric S-Class luxury saloon car, which was unveiled in Seoul.
