Pure Lithium has announced it has been granted a foundational patent titled ‘Vertically Integrated Pure Lithium Metal Production and Lithium Battery Production’ by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The patent spans lithium extraction, anode production and battery manufacturing, marking a significant step in the company’s global expansion.
The firm’s Brine to Battery™ trademark is now registered in Saudi Arabia, strengthening its intellectual property base in the region.
Founder, chairman and CEO Emilie Bodoin explained, “The technology is particularly relevant to Saudi Arabia because it is one of the places in the world with lithium-containing brines, and even has an abundance of vanadium, which is used in our second-generation battery.”
She added, “In order to displace today’s lithium-ion battery, our vision is to create global battery hubs with closed loop supply chains, not just in the US, but in the many places in the world where the materials are co-located. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is one of these perfect fits, and our visions are clearly aligned.”
Pure Lithium previously secured a US patent for “Lithium Metal and Lithium Battery” in February 2023, with Bodoin named sole inventor. The company now holds more than 128 patents and applications worldwide, alongside multiple trademarks.
Saudi Arabia’s Energy Capital Group invested in Pure Lithium in 2023, stating the technology “could provide Saudi Arabia with the ability to enter the battery manufacturing space with the competitive edge of having unprecedented supply chain security.”
The company’s lithium metal battery is designed to be more powerful, lighter and cheaper than conventional lithium-ion cells. Crucially, it avoids graphite, nickel, cobalt and manganese, reducing reliance on China and simplifying supply chains by sourcing elements located closer together geographically.
