Sweden-based Scania Industrial Batteries and US-based MacLean Engineering have entered into a strategic collaboration to support the electrification of underground mining vehicles, strengthening their focus on battery-electric equipment for demanding mining applications.
The agreement builds on Scania’s experience in mining electrification, with its battery systems designed for electric rigs, loaders and other heavy-duty underground vehicles. More than 2,000 Scania battery systems are already in operation in underground mines globally, supporting powertrains from 400V to 800V and offering scalable energy capacities between 21kWh and 768kWh.
As mining operators look to reduce operating costs, improve underground working conditions and cut emissions, battery-electric machinery is becoming an increasingly attractive alternative to diesel-powered fleets. Scania and MacLean said their collaboration will support this transition while maintaining the performance and reliability required in underground mining environments.

Scania was chosen as MacLean’s preferred battery supplier following what the companies described as an extensive global evaluation. The assessment included technical performance, regulatory compliance, safety, long-term support and system integration.
Battery performance, operational reliability and technician safety were key factors during the selection process. The evaluation also considered battery system design and safety features aimed at reducing arc-flash incident energy and supporting safe maintenance in underground mining conditions.

Under the agreement, Scania will supply its Core 800 battery packs, which provide 97kWh of installed energy at a nominal voltage of 691V, together with advanced thermal management and the company’s proprietary battery management system. The companies will also work together to support future battery-electric vehicle deployments and customer service.
