Siemens Mobility has marked the start of construction on a cutting-edge rail battery system manufacturing facility in Luhe-Wildenau, Bavaria.
The site, spanning approximately 20,000m2, will employ up to 200 staff to produce rail battery systems for Siemens regional trains, locomotives and third-party customers.
The €35 million investment includes €22 million from Siemens Mobility and €2.7 million in subsidies from Bavarian state funding. The initiative reinforces Siemens Mobility’s commitment to Germany as a centre for innovation and manufacturing, aligning with its ‘Made for Germany’ strategy. Building completion is expected by spring 2027, with full-scale production launching in October that year.
“With the new battery system production facility in Luhe-Wildenau, we are making a clear commitment to Germany as a production and innovation hub” said Karl Blaim, CFO of Siemens Mobility. “We are investing specifically in key technologies, creating high-quality jobs in the region, and strengthening the competitiveness of the domestic rail industry.”
“This project will drive Bavaria forward, both technologically and economically. The production of state-of-the-art train batteries is a key, future-oriented field that will benefit not only Luhe-Wildenau and the Upper Palatinate, but Bavaria as a whole”, added Hubert Aiwanger, Bavarian minister of state for economic affairs.
The facility will produce complete rail battery systems, including a Battery Management System (BMS) developed with Munich-based Stercom. With a future output capacity of 120MWh annually, the plant will play a vital role in decarbonising rail transport.
