LRE (Leeward Renewable Energy) has confirmed that its Sierra Pinta Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is now fully operational in Yuma County, Arizona. The stand‑alone facility delivers 112.5MW / 450MWh of storage capacity and represents the company’s second grid‑connected battery installation in the region.
Sierra Pinta forms part of a six‑phase development programme in Yuma County, which began with the White Wing Ranch Solar project. Combined, these schemes now provide more than 291MW of power capacity locally.
Construction of the Sierra Pinta facility generated around 100 jobs, and the project is expected to contribute long‑term economic value to the county. This includes an estimated $12,375,000 in property tax revenue over the project’s lifetime, alongside continued investment in community initiatives. Through the LRE Foundation, the company supports organisations such as Elevate Southwest, Helping Hands of Yuma, Dateland Elementary School, Antelope Union High School and the Yuma Community Food Bank, with a focus on education and workforce development.
The BESS is engineered to store electricity during periods of low demand and release it during peak evening hours. This helps ease pressure on the wider system, supports cost‑efficient power delivery and strengthens grid reliability for Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) customers, while contributing to regional energy storage and resilience goals.
“Bringing Sierra Pinta online is an important milestone for LRE and demonstrates our commitment to delivering innovative and affordable energy solutions across the West,” said Sam Mangrum, Executive Vice President, Project Execution, LRE. “With a 112.5 MW interconnection, the facility underscores our ability to deliver large-scale, dispatchable power when and where it is needed most.”
LRE owns and operates 30+ wind, solar, and energy storage projects totalling over 4GW in the US.
