Leading ultracapacitor firm Skeleton Technologies has been handed €4 million as part of a pledge to support its target to reach 20 Wh/kg of energy density for its patented graphene ultracapacitors.
The ultracapacitors are already being used by the European Space Agency, and Estonia-based Skeleton Technologies claims its technology can be applied in the automotive, grid and renewables and heavy transport sectors.
In July, investment company KIC InnoEnergy Sweden pledged to invest almost €10 million to boost the deployment of Skeleton’s ultracapitors, which includes its SkelCap 4500 ultracapacitors that were launched last year.
“Energy storage is one of the key issues facing the European energy sector,” said Kenneth Johansson, CEO of KIC InnoEnergy Sweden.
“The future need for energy storage can hardly be underestimated and we look forward to embracing this opportunity through the development of this technology.”
