Slovakia’s first EV battery facility has officially launched, with Gotion High-Tech marking the milestone at a ceremony held on 28 October in Šurany.
Occupying 95 hectares, the site is engineered for an initial capacity of 20GWh and is scheduled to begin production in 2027. All EV battery output will serve the EU market, bolstering regional supply chains and reinforcing Gotion’s role in Europe’s green industrial ecosystem.
“Gotion will take ‘Made in Slovakia’ batteries as a driving force to empower global green energy,” said Li Zhen, chairman of Gotion.
Beyond manufacturing, the gigafactory will act as a regional centre for research, innovation and skills development. Gotion plans to collaborate with local universities and institutions to foster an open industry–education ecosystem, cultivating future talent and accelerating breakthroughs in new energy technologies.
The project is expected to generate around 1,300 jobs in its initial phase and attract supporting industries, strengthening Slovakia’s position in Europe’s energy transformation.
“The production facility in Šurany will bring significant added value and create a substantial number of jobs. It will also contribute to economic growth, which is essential for improving the quality of life of people not only in this region but across the whole of Slovakia,” said Robert Fico, prime minister of the Slovak Republic.
