Vancouver-based smart energy company, Energy Aware, has developed a metering device called Neurio for domestic energy users.
Unlike other smart meters, Neurio does not need sensors on individual appliances throughout the house. A sensor is installed in the breaker panel to access and analyse data on appliance usage throughout the home.
The data is analysed via a cloud service using smart pattern detection algorithms.
Users are alerted to energy consumption by an app called Wattson. It can show when an appliance is left switched on and how much energy individual appliances consume.
