Technology firm DST Innovations has secured £1.25 million ($1.9 million) in private investment to expand their sodium battery research facility in Wales.
The investment will create up to 25 permanent scientific jobs, as the firm aims to optimise the chemistry to reduce the price of production; and to make enhancements to the manufacturing process, to boost productivity.
The company is in negotiations on the location of the battery plant in Wales, with the manufacturing capacity set to be announced when the location is chosen.
Work has begun on its pilot facilities in West Virginia, US, which is due to come online this summer.
In December, BEST reported how UK lithium-ion gigafactory hopeful Britishvolt had changed its plans to build a plant in Wales five months after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Welsh government.
The company now plans to build its plant in the North East of England, with construction set to begin this summer, after it acquired exclusive rights to a site in Blyth, Northumberland.
