Global renewable energy firm Sonnedix said it has over 800MW of capacity in Italy after acquiring five BESS projects and is on track for 1GW by the end of the year.
The firm, which has historically been focused on the solar market but is now broadening its portfolio, has approximately 500MW of capacity currently under construction in Italy.
It has a development pipeline of around 1.1GW and is expected to double its operational Italian capacity to 2GW by the end of 2o28.
Sonnedix said it has started the construction of its first BESS project in Italy, an 18MW capacity four-hour duration plant based in Sicily. It will be co-located with a 70MW capacity solar plant, currently under construction.
The firm has a total capacity of over 11.8GW in capacity, with almost 1GW under construction and a development pipeline of more than 6.7GW across Chile, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Poland, Portugal, Spain, UK, and the US.
Axel Thiemann, CEO, Sonnedix, said: “It’s remarkable to see the growth we’ve achieved since entering the Italian market in 2010, when we operationalised Sonnedix’s very first solar plant – and these latest acquisitions are a testament to our long-term commitment to delivering clean, affordable, and reliable energy to customers. Looking ahead, our focus is on continuing to convert our pipeline, particularly exploring opportunities in battery storage and hybridisation. With our extensive knowledge of the Italian energy landscape, and long-term footprint in the market, we are well positioned for continued sustainable growth.”
