Two Asian battery makers are challenging the dominance of Germany’s Sonnen as the top provider of energy storage systems in the country, according to latest research.
Sonnen is still ranked No.1 in the annual ‘league table’ of home storage systems with a market share of 18%, according to an annual study compiled by Bonn-based market and opinion research institute EuPD.
But South Korea’s LG Chem and China’s BYD are now the second and third top battery storage suppliers to German homes, EuPD said. BYD’s reported 13% share of the market (up from around 5% previously) pushed Varta (10%) down to fifth in the ranking— compared to the No.3 slot it held in last year’s study. LG Chem’s market share dipped from 20% previously to 17%.
Overall, the top three ranked firms supply every second residential battery storage system sold in Germany, EuPD’s study indicated.
According to EuPD, the German residential battery storage market “continued to grow significantly” in 2018— reaching a total of some 45,000 battery systems. The sales were bolstered by continued increases in sales of domestic solar power systems.
