SPML Infra Limited, one of India’s prominent publicly listed infrastructure developers, has secured a landmark ₹1,128 crore contract to deliver a 1 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at NTPC’s Barauni Thermal Power Station in Bihar.
The award marks the company’s first major grid‑scale battery storage project and stands among the largest single BESS orders issued in India.
The NTPC‑awarded scheme covers full design, engineering, supply, civil construction, installation and commissioning of a 250 MW/1,000 MWh BESS. This includes 5 MWh DC containers equipped with Battery Management and Thermal Management Systems, 33 kV panel boards, 220 kV DC and AC cabling, a 220 kV switchyard and all related components. Delivery is scheduled across an 18‑month period, followed by 15 years of operation and maintenance.
Once operational, the system will integrate large‑scale battery storage with existing thermal infrastructure to support peak demand, stabilise the grid and enhance the efficient use of renewable energy. As India’s power networks modernise, BESS technology is rapidly becoming essential to building a flexible and resilient electricity system.
Abhinandan Sethi, Managing Director of SPML Infra Limited, said: “This order marks a defining moment for SPML Infra, a firm commitment to the large-scale battery energy storage sector. Energy storage will define how India powers its future, and we intend to be architects of that transformation. Partnering with NTPC on this landmark project is both a privilege and a responsibility we embrace fully. We are here to build the grid India needs — flexible, stable, and built for scale.”
The project strengthens SPML Infra’s strategic expansion into energy storage, developed in partnership with Energy Vault (NYSE:NRGV), and reinforces its commitment to advanced battery solutions designed for India’s growing energy ambitions. With this milestone, the company further consolidates its role in the country’s emerging battery storage ecosystem.
