Sumitomo Electric Industries has initiated a 4MW/12.5MWh battery storage system using redox flow batteries in Oki County, Japan.
The project is supported by Japan’s environment ministry to mainstream renewable energy on remote islands. It promotes carbon neutrality and builds resilience in the remote Oki Islands, Sumitomo said.
It is working with Chugoku Electric Power Transmission & Distribution Co, Ama Town and a community sustainable energy initiative called como-gomo.company. Financial details were not disclosed.
The project will build a next-generation power network that can respond to disasters, including independent power supply operation (microgrid) during emergencies, Sumitomo said.
This initiative is expected to contribute not only to Ama Town, but also to expanding the introduction of renewable energy throughout the Oki Islands, it added. The islands are designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark due to the natural beauty and unique culture.
