Swiss company Flexbase is planning to build a 500MW/1.2GWh flow battery on the Swiss-German border. It is claiming it will be the biggest flow battery in the world.
The company is due to start construction by spring 2025 in Laufenburg, a town on the Swiss-German border on the Rhine. The site is also the connection point for electricity grids in France, Germany and Switzerland.
The battery system will cover 168x79x30 metres, with a 25m basement. The company said the storage system is being built on a site of more than 20,000 sq m, to enable the efficient use of renewable energy and to stabilise the power grids.
Dalian Energy Storage Station in China is currently the world’s biggest flow battery project. Rongke Power Co provided the battery equipment and is working in phases. The power station was commissioned in 2022, with construction of Phase II getting underway. Each phase is 100MW/400MWh.
Flexbase said a new technology centre will also be built in conjunction with universities. The energy storage system is to be supplemented by a data centre for artificial intelligence and a wind tunnel for research and development in the sports sector.
