Scientists tackle power and stability concerns to develop cathode for sodium, magnesium and aluminium batteries

Scientists at the University of Maryland have re-designed battery cathodes to make more efficient, stable and affordable rechargeable sodium, magnesium and aluminium batteries.

The researchers, backed by an international group of collaborators, have used polymeric hexaazatrinaphthalene (PHATN), based on the organic compound pyrazine, as a high-capacity, fast-charging cathode material.

Battery storage rise to fuel metals demand, says World Bank

The global trend towards using clean energy systems such as battery storage technology will see “heightened demand” for minerals and metals including lead and lithium, according to a new World Bank report.

A shift to a low-carbon future “could result in opportunities for mineral-rich countries”, the report said. But it warned these nations must have “long-term strategies in place that enable them to make smart investment decisions”.

Dexmet has introduced new microgrid anode and cathode foil materials down to 25 micron (.001”) in both aluminum and copper at widths up to 305mm (12”). 

These thinner materials produce very small openings in the material, and should prove to be the perfect anode and cathode electrode solution for improved overall cell performance.
