Utility-scale energy storage developer esVolta has been chosen to supply four lithium-ion battery storage systems to provide “incremental capacity” in California for utility Southern California Edison Company (SCE).

SCE said the systems, with a combined battery storage capacity of 38.5 megawatt-hours, would provide incremental capacity at specifically targeted locations, in order to improve the reliability of SCE’s electric distribution system”.

The installations in Riverside and Ventura counties— the contracts for which are subject to approval by the California Public Utilities Commission— will also “avoid more costly system upgrades that would otherwise be necessary to meet anticipated load demand”, SCE said.

The potential for cost-effective battery storage projects in the US state of Nevada could range from 700 megawatts to more than 1,000MW by 2030, according to a new economic study.

The Brattle Group report, prepared for the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada and the Nevada Governor's Office of Energy, also found that— for the Nevada system with a peak demand of roughly 8,500MW— up to 175MW of utility-scale battery storage with a four-hour storage capacity could be deployed cost effectively by 2020.

Golden State to grill lead batteries

The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) last week published its 2018-2020 Draft Priority Product Work Plan that will put pressure on lead battery manufactures to see whether there are “safer alternatives” to the existing products.

The much-anticipated plan identifies the product categories that DTSC will evaluate over the next three years as potential "priority products" under California's green chemistry programme.

US firms team up to provide ‘all-American’ solution

US lithium-ion energy storage firm Sunverge Energy and San Francisco-based solar installer PetersenDean Roofing & Solar are teaming up to provide an “all-American” energy solution to Californian homes.

Sunverge’s lithium-ion battery energy storage systems (BESS) allows Californian residents to capture the power they generate from their rooftops as well as automatically use it when demand and energy prices are highest. By integrating Sunverge’s energy management platform with each storage system, PetersenDean can offer backup power during electric outages.
