Powin Energy receives China patent for BMS

Energy storage developer Powin Energy Corporation has been awarded a Chinese patent for its battery management system.

Designed specifically for energy storage systems, the US firm’s Battery Pack Operating System (bp-OS), was also awarded a US patent in June.

Self-healing Li-ion batteries have been developed in China

Chinese scientists have used carbon nanotubes to develop a thin, flexible lithium-ion battery that can heal itself after breaking, according to reports by Angewandte Chemie.

The battery has self-healing abilities, which even after completely breaking apart, can grow back together without significant impact on its electrochemical properties.

Future of lead-acid lays beyond carbon additives

Chinese battery maker Narada Power Source has boosted the performance of an advanced lead-acid battery by reducing the electrolyte and enhancing the partial state-of-charge window.

The company also tweaked the re-charge algorithms to allow its advanced deep-cycling valve regulated lead-acid (VRLA) battery to achieve more than 26,000 power-assisted cycles.

Chinese lithium waste is ‘horse manure crisis’ of the 1800s

Chinese analysts have compared the growing threat of waste lithium batteries to the ‘Great Horse Manure Crisis’ that swamped the world’s cities in the late 1800s.

The 19th century crisis, caused by dung coming from the colossal number of horses that were needed for transport, led to a prediction in The Times newspaper of London that ‘in 50 years every street in the capital  will be buried under nine feet of manure’.

Another Chinese lead-acid firm takes on lithium-ion

China’s battery maker Guangdong Dynavolt has become the latest Chinese lead-acid firm to add a lithium-ion arm to its business on the back of plans to build an R&D centre for the chemistry.

The battery manufacturer has paid $2 million for a 33.33% share of Nevada-based 12V deep cycle lithium battery maker Dragonfly Energy.

Price hikes of lithium carbonate have prompted a Chinese battery maker to demand a government investigation into an alleged supply monopoly.

Fang Jianhua, CEO of lithium-ion battery maker Hefei Guoxuan Hi-Tech Power Company, says all companies should be asking why recent spikes had brought the price of lithium carbonate to such ‘unreasonable’ levels.

US-based ultracapacitor manufacturer Maxwell Technologies has signed a deal to develop energy storage technology for the Chinese rail market.

The long-term strategic partnership agreement with China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation’s (CRRC) Qingdao Sifang Rolling Stock Research Institute covers the joint development of the technology.

Electrovaya secures Chinese separator order

Canadian firm Electrovaya has secured a deal to supply a Chinese battery manufacturer with its lithium-ion separator technology.

The Chinese lithium-ion battery company qualified after intense testing of Separion in its electric vehicle program. The deal is expected to be worth around CAD$1 million (US$800,000).
