Additive breakthrough paves way to safer lithium-ion batteries

Researchers from Columbia University's engineering department in the US have reported that alkali metal additives, such as potassium ions, can prevent dendritic growth in lithium-ion batteries.

The team found small amounts of potassium salt added to a conventional lithium battery electrolyte produced unique chemistry at the lithium/electrolyte interface.

A positive solution to enhance the capacity of lithium-ion batteries

An academic at Columbia University, US, has developed a trilayer lithium structure that is stable even in ambient air, making the lithium-ion battery both longer lasting and cheaper to manufacture. 

The work, which may increase the energy density of lithium batteries by 10-30%, is published in Nano Letters.
