World Bank leads new push for battery storage

An international “technology-neutral” partnership to expand the use of energy storage systems in developing countries has been launched by 30 organisations led by the World Bank.

The Energy Storage Partnership (ESP) aims to “catalyse a new market for batteries”, beyond the current focus on the market to supply electric vehicles, the bank said.

Storage4EU showcases “innovative and inspiring storage projects”

In an effort to highlight some of the successes of energy storage projects hitherto and inspire similar ventures henceforth, the European Association for Storage of Energy (EASE) has unveiled a new initiative to showcase “some of the most innovative and inspiring storage projects supporting the energy transition”.  

Featured projects include a 6MW/6MWh Engie system in Drogenbos, Belgium that is formed of five separate pilot batteries; a 11.5MW/22.5MWh lithium-ion and sodium-sulfur system in Niedersachsen, Germany; and Highview’s 5MW/15MWh Liquid Air Energy Storage System in Greater Manchester, UK (featured in this week’s BEST Battery Briefing

Advanced lead ‘reliable and competitive for storage’

Advanced lead batteries are proving an “effective energy storage and distribution option” for projects including frequency regulation, wind and solar generated electricity and local energy grids, an international conference was told.

Battery expert Dr Geoffrey May told the Energy Storage Global Conference in Brussels new developments in lead battery technology, including reduced sulfation, are enhancing performance in shallow cycling.
